Newton Business and Industry

old building

Newton enjoys a flourishing, stable economy, with several well-known corporations leading the pack. From dairy production to plastics manufacturing, as well as an abundant amount of retail, Newton maintains a progressive economic environment, not only locally, but also state and nationwide.

The community serves as the location for Maytag Dairy Farms, which produces world-renowned blue cheese. The company first began producing its famed cheese in 1941 after Fred Maytag II, the grandson of the founder of the appliance company, researched a new process in the making of blue cheese, created by Iowa State University. The process consists of hand-making the cheese in smaller batches, with each batch consistently monitored over its aging process for top flavor. The company continues to be a strong force in Iowa’s already vibrant economy.

In addition to the Maytag Dairy Farms entity is a myriad of other large, successful companies. The area is home to 21 manufacturing plants, specializing in a variety of products and services, and has over 5,000 employees working in manufacturing and service industries.

A host of retailers, ranging from antique and specialty shops to malls and the downtown area retailers, are located within Newton. Also included in the community’s strong business atmosphere are a number of accommodations, dining spots and unique attractions, bringing in visitors from all over the country.
