Shelby County is located one mile north of U.S. Interstate 80 in the heart
of southwest Iowa’s picturesque countryside. Interstates 35 and
29 provide north/south access.
Twenty freight carriers operate in Shelby, and the County is the home
of Panama Transfer — which offers freight service and connections
throughout the greater Midwest. There is also a terminal site for Yellow
Freight, and rail service is provided by the Burlington Northern/Santa
Fe Railroad — which has daily switching capabilities.
Shelby County is served by the Harlan Municipal Airport. The airport’s
4,100-foot asphalt and concrete runway provides access to United Express,
business jets, turbo props and large twin planes. An Automatic Weather
Observation Service (AWOS) was installed in 1999.
Located 45 minutes from Shelby County, Eppley Airfield is the area’s
regional airport of choice. One of the fastest growing airports in the
nation, Eppley serves over four million passengers annually, and provides
major air services to the greater Omaha/Western Iowa region. The airfield
is home to 10 major airlines, two commuter airlines and six airfreight
companies.
