Welcome from the Mayor
Welcome to Washington, Iowa, a community that encourages hometown values.
Located 30 miles from the Iowa City, Coralville metro area, our community offers residents a comfortable, affordable setting that encourages lasting values and a safe haven to raise a family. In fact, Norman Crampton, a renowned author and researcher of small cities in America, has on three occasions, selected the city of Washington among the top 100 small towns in the country.
Washington has all the elements of a great community: an airport, a new hospital which will be completed in 2006, outstanding parks, schools with exceptional staff, a YMCA/YWCA, a local paper and radio station, health and fitness services, dance studios, a variety of grocery stores and fine restaurants, a large screen movie theater and an outstanding state of the art community theater.
If further education is an interest, our Kirkwood Learning Center is available and we are also located near community colleges as well as the renowned University of Iowa. Our well maintained highway system with the Avenue of the Saints nearby, allows access to major metro areas that enhance robust business opportunity.
The community has a variety of service clubs. The talent and ability of our citizens to do the things that make a difference is never in short supply.
Most importantly, we are a community on the move. We look forward to pursuing a downtown renovation project, continuing our tradition of a truly interactive town center and pursuing those initiatives that will maintain the high standards that allow us to be named one of the nation’s 100 best small towns.
I am very pleased that you have taken the time to visit our community and encourage you to come and join us.
