Location & Transportation
Just 30 minutes from Interstate 80 and ten minutes from the Avenue of the Saints, Washington maintains its central location. Major road connections have helped Washington move its livestock and agricultural products to businesses in larger cities while endeavoring to maintain its local roads in order to provide easy access to the incoming and outgoing public.
Washington is approximately 30 minutes from the nation-wide train system, Amtrak, which has connections in Mount Pleasant. Washington is also about 30 minutes from Iowa City, home to the University of Iowa and its famous hospitals and clinics. It is 45 minutes from two regional airports, Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Moline, Illinois.
Washington provides many modes of transportation that keep the community the center of attention. One contributing transport is the Washington airport, taking pride in its two heavy-duty concrete runways, which can support most business jets. New additions to the airport include ground communications outlet and upgraded security lighting. With numerous types of aircraft using the runways, the airport maintains reliable access in most types of weather and winds. Washington airport does not have a control tower but does offer 24-hour fueling with jet A or 100 ll, allowing pilots to arrive and depart as quickly as they wish.
Since 1972, Washington has been one of the smallest towns to support a public transportation system. With the help of Minibus, a private nonprofit organization that operates 20 vehicles, community residents without any form of transportation can get from one place to the other. The minibuses are often seen transporting children to school and the elderly to the grocery store or the doctor’s office. The Washington County Minibus is handicapped accessible and vans provide public transportation within Washington County.
Whether it is by driving, flying or public transportation, Washington balances mobility in its central location.
