Washington Chamber of Commerce

Arts & Entertainment

Washington’s beauty can be seen on one side through golden aged trees, manicured gardens and stately parks, and yet another side of the community can be seen in an extensive community center, a charming, well-maintained movie theater, accomplished dance studios and a variety of down-home cookin’ and ethnic styled restaurants.

Whether one finds entertainment through box office hit movies or live theatrical and musical shows, Washington pays homage to all. Starting with the Washington Community Center whose prestigious 22,000 square-foot building seats 500-plus in the auditorium. A state of the art sound and light system provides an ideal place to host a variety of live entertainment. Its structure accommodates cultural and educational programming for the surrounding area. It is a community effort with directorial, production and sound stage artists. The theater entertains with comedies, classics, musicals and dramas. Washington Community Theater stages four productions each year. In addition, independent acting groups and school plays offer top-notch entertainment.

The State Theater shows box office hit movies in the evening during the weekday and a variety of times during the weekend. During the summer and winter school vacations, the theater, in cooperation with local merchants, treats the community to free family movies.

Washington Concert Association adds its voice to the community by providing vocal soloists, classical instrumental music and era style music. Washington Concert Association brings high-quality professional musical events to Washington throughout the year.

Through music, the Washington Choral Society offers residents a chance to participate in and hear concert repertory as well as popular music. The choral society established the quality of its credentials by performing at New York City’s Carnegie Hall in 2000 and in 2003. Additional cultural areas that can be experienced in Washington are through two dance studios, which offer instructional dance. Children practice tap, tumbling, ballet, jazz and modern dance. At the end of the dance season the dance studios entertain the community with recitals.

Since 1877 the Washington Public Library has been providing a variety of media to the public. With videos, music CDs, newspapers, magazines and books, books and more books, even the most diversified individual will find something in the library. The history of the library can be traced back to Jane Chilcote when she willed her house in 1903 for its use.

Family, friends, food and entertainment, the community has splendidly woven together culture and dining to offer all that is good to its commonwealth.
