Washington has enjoyed prosperous and developing economic vitality since its inception. The county hails as one of the leading hog producing areas in the country, and is also a national leader in corn, soybean and beef production.
Even with this, manufacturing has remained a leading force in Washington. Some top manufacturers in the area include Modine, a global manufacturer of heat transfer products; Syngenta, an agricultural-based business focused on soybean research; Whitesell Corporation, a wire products manufacturer; ACH Foam Technology, a top producer of extruded polystyrene; Iowa Bridge and Culvert, a manufacturer of concrete bridge parts; and Engineered Building Design, a fabricator of building trusses. A further notable manufacturing entity located just outside of the Washington community is Premier Sheep, a business centered on operating a worldwide mail order business for sheep related products, as well as performing its own product assembly.
The two newest companies to Washington focus on renewable energy. Iowa Renewable Energy is a 30 million gallon per year bio-diesel plant. It is an all Iowa owned LLC and is part of the Renewable Energy Groups network of bio-diesel plants. Practical Environmental Solutions is family owned and operated. They converted a local feed mill to a wood pelletizing mill. They produce the wood pellets as an alternative fuel source.
Local business and industry is fortunate to have considerable support from a handful of resources, which includes the benefits of having a revered community college at hand. With the presence of Kirkwood Community College, Washington is teeming with dedicated, highly-skilled and well-educated workers, with the additional benefits of workforce training and continuing education courses.
The Washington Economic Development Group (WEDG) is designed to promote economic growth in the area through the creation of new jobs, establishment of diverse businesses and preservation of present business operations. Working closely with Washington businesses and investors in maintaining and encouraging business and industrial expansion, WEDG is an advantageous resource in the area. Businesses, big or small, established or new to the area, have access to ample amounts of indispensable information and materials pertinent to aiding in the success of Washington’s economy. Currently, the organization oversees an 18-acre industrial park complete with fully-developed lots.
When it comes to the betterment of both the business sector and the community at-large, the Washington Chamber of Commerce is at the forefront. This private, not-for-profit voluntary organization brings together hundreds of local businesses through a number of programs, networking events and a host of additional services. The Chamber also strives to promote shopping locally, act as the community information hub, provide business referrals, maintain a community calendar and encourage the city of Washington in all facets on a daily basis.
What’s more, since 1990 the Chamber has directed Leadership Washington, a program designed to educate and supply an initiation to the resources of the community, as well as the challenges it is confronted with now and in the future.
The benefits are limitless. For more information on the Washington Chamber of Commerce, please visit www.washingtoniowachamber.com
