Worship & Organizations

church

The diverse spiritual community that resides within Washington is proof of the community’s great diversity. Nineteen houses of worship representing a score of religions are sprinkled throughout Washington, providing congregations with a variety of services and programs.

Along with the regular and special gatherings, many of the local places of worship afford community outreach through such programs as weekly clubs, youth groups and a variety of events and activities designed to inspire through faith.

The Washington Ministerial Association is a strong voice in the community, working to unite the community through local events and outreach projects. The association sponsors an inter-denominational church service each summer in Central Park, and in the late fall, gathers church members in celebration of an Ecumenical Thanksgiving service. It is through such initiatives as these that bring the Washington community together in commemoration of a common faith, regardless of the religion.

Additionally, more than 100 service clubs and social organizations have been established here. Organizations such as the American Cancer Society of Washington, the local Habitat for Humanity and the Hawkeye Area Community Action Program, to name a few, sponsor supportive events in the community throughout the year. Further local philanthropic groups contribute to such measures as college scholarships, the issuing of clothing, books, bicycles and more for underprivileged children and families and the contribution of beautiful flowers and trees in order to beautify the Washington community.
