For close to 100 years, Washington County Hospital and Clinics has been providing healthcare services to Washington County and surrounding community residents. Founded in 1912, the 25-bed Critical Access hospital and 43-bed nursing home provides inpatient, outpatient, long-term care and emergency services for Washington County and surrounding areas.

The hospital was originally founded as Washington County Hospital, the first rural county public hospital in Iowa and west of the Mississippi. The name change to Washington County Hospital and Clinics (WCHC) occurred in November of 1998 in an effort to encompass more of what the hospital offers and after completing a major expansion project. In 2006 and 2007, the hospital was able to invest even more in the future of healthcare in Washington by constructing new hospital facilities. These state-of-the-art facilities offer the latest in technological advancements in healthcare, while reflecting on comfort and a pleasing environment for patients and their families.

WCHC’s entire healthcare team strives to meet the changing medical needs of the communities they serve. With today’s shift to shorter hospital stays, WCHC provides an extensive outpatient surgery department, radiology and rehabilitation services. The McCreedy Home and the Keota Community Clinic also extends the continuum of care available in their communities. WCHC continuously meets healthcare needs with compassionate treatment, state-of-the-art technology and a competent staff of professionals.

New Medical/Surgical Floor and Respiratory Therapy The new Medical/Surgical floor features all private rooms, which studies have shown offer real advantages in patient care including faster healing; shorter stays; and reduced infections, use of narcotics and medical errors.The rooms have a large bathroom that features a walk-in shower. WCHC also understands that support from family members often allows for a quicker recovery. WCHC wants to not only accommodate the patient but also their families. A family area and daybeds are featured in every room, allowing family members to feel “at home.” Large windows allow the patient to view the landscaped exteriors and enjoy the natural sunlight.

WCHC’s newly constructed Medical Surgical Unit houses the Respiratory Therapy Department at WCHC, which treats, manages and is responsible for the testing of patients with lung disease and breathing difficulties. Treatments can be done in their private treatment room or in a patient’s hospital room.

WCHC’s surgeons and surgical staff provide the following surgical procedures: general surgery, orthopedics, ENT, eye, podiatry, gastroenterology and gynecological procedures.

By utilizing the latest surgical techniques and technology, WCHC’s surgical staff remains on the cutting edge of the latest advances including laparoscopic surgery.

WCHC’s Ambulatory Care Department offers the convenience of home recovery (avoiding the cost of an overnight hospital stay) combined with the highest level of care, experience and support possible. In consideration of your time, pre-admission testing is performed prior to the day of surgery to facilitate admission and treatment.

Outpatient Nursing Services are also offered through the OPTIONS Department at WCHC. Less expensive than an inpatient stay or emergency room visits, OPTIONS serves all those who need nursing services on an outpatient basis, such as wound care, IV therapy, enemas, IV’s, chemotherapy, injections and many other areas.

New Family Birthing Center The beautiful new Family Birthing Center at WCHC strives to make the birth of your child one of the most memorable experiences in your life. All rooms are considered LDRP, which means you labor, deliver, recover and spend your time after birth in the same room. The spacious rooms offer the latest in technology and comfort to not only the new mom, but to family members as well. A Murphy bed folds down right into the room for overnight visitors. All rooms are furnished with a HDTV, rocking chair, table for meals and a spacious bathroom.

The Family Birthing Center offers the latest in security to assure the safety and health of the new babies. There is no public access to the area, visitors must be buzzed both in and out, and the area is under 24-hour surveillance by camera. The progress and health of the mother and unborn child are tracked with sophisticated monitoring equipment that allows doctors to monitor labor over the Internet from a remote location.

New Emergency Room The new Emergency Room is located just inside the Main Entrance, thus there is now one main entrance for all hospital services. The Emergency Room does have a separate ambulance entrance with immediate access to all critical areas of patient care, private ER treatments rooms to allow more confidentiality and a large double-bay trauma room. The Emergency Room is physician-staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. WCHC has access to specialized services on an emergency basis through the use of helicopters, which land on campus for patient needs. The Emergency Room Department at Washington County Hospital and Clinics is a Level IV Community Trauma Care Facility.

New Cardiac Rehab and Specialty Clinic Area Directly inside the main entrance is the new Specialty Clinic and Cardiac Rehab areas. Six exam rooms and two work stations serve WCHC’s visiting specialists from Iowa City, which includes cardiology; ear, nose & throat; neurology; podiatry; urology; orthopedics; gastroenterology; opthalmology; and surgery.

The new Cardiac Rehab area at WCHC offers Phase I and Phase II Cardiac Rehab. This includes individualized rehabilitative sessions, which consists of an exercise program utilizing circuit training, discussions of risk factors, medical plan of care, medication assessment and counseling, dietary counseling, and life style adjustments. WCHC staff also assists physicians and cardiologists who perform diagnostic testing, which includes stress tests, bubble echos, stress echos and Dobutamine echos.

The Therapy Department at WCHC has recently added hydrotherapy as additional treatment for many disorders. Hydrotherapy offers many benefits in the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries.

The Washington County Hospital Foundation (WCHF) has been making a difference in the community since its establishment with a mission to encourage, accept and steward all public and private gifts, grants and contributions in support of the hospital. Through donor dollars, the WCHF has purchased equipment and funded educational programs. The organization holds annual events, such as the WCHF Care for Our Kids Golf Event to raise awareness and funds for children’s healthcare.

McCreedy Home provides skilled nursing care for the elderly. It is connected to the hospital for easy access for emergency needs. The facility was able to add a new dining room and office space during recent renovations. A “facelift” was also done throughout the home to offer a fresh look to the building.

Further services for the area’s mature population can be found through Lending Hands, a daycare provider for adults. Adults who cannot be independently alone for the day while family members are out can find a variety of things to do and make friends at the same time. ;
