Worship in Washington

With nineteen places of worship and numerous denominations, religion maintains a major focal point in Washington. Congregational meetings take place on a weekly basis providing spiritual growth and social activities to meet the various needs of the community.

Churches are inspiring the youth on a daily basis to take an active role in their community while maintaining a strong faith in their beliefs. Many local churches offer a weekly kids club for students kindergarten through sixth grade. Youth groups can be seen throughout the week providing services for the elderly, whether it is washing windows or cleaning homes.

Each summer the Washington Ministerial Association sponsors an inter-denominational church service in Central Park. In the late fall, the association gathers together their church members to celebrate an Ecumenical Thanksgiving service, which rotates to various churches in the community. It is here that religion overcomes denominations and unites the community in celebration of a common faith. The association initiates many outreach projects that touch the lives and meets the needs of the community and its surrounding areas.

Over 100 service clubs and social organizations thrive throughout Washington. The American Cancer Society of Washington County sponsors the fundraiser “Relay for Life.” Local Habitat for Humanity volunteers have completed twelve homes for deserving families. Hawkeye Area Community Action Program sponsors a local food pantry and offers other services to struggling families. Other local philanthropic groups contribute college scholarships, provide eyeglasses, books, bicycles for underprivileged children and contribute flowers and trees to beautify Washington.
