City of Washington

Welcome to Washington, a community happily rediscovering the charisma of our historic downtown district.

Downtown enhancement became a priority for us following a survey that underscored that Washington’s commercial and residential sectors cherish Central Park, our downtown green space, as the heart of our community. Public and private reinvestments have enabled us to build the new Washington Free Public Library on the square and provide a streetscape that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional. Families have gathered in Central Park to enjoy Centennial Fountain for 70 years and Central Park is the place to be each Thursday all summer long. We enjoy a leisurely evening of Farmers’ Market, are entertained by local small music and dance groups, and close the evening listening to the 70-member Washington Municipal Band, which has been pleasing crowds for more than three quarters of a century. When restoration of the memorial bandstand is complete in the spring of 2010, the expansion of the stage area and sound system will give the band an even better venue for performance.

We have an active Historic Preservation Commission helping us appreciate the heritage of our community, and especially our downtown. The Washington Incentive Fund initiated by local banks has helped downtown properties with low-interest loans to make facade improvements. Recently selected as a Main Street community, our retailers are receiving assistance via Main Street with building design, merchandising ideas and holding special events.

Come visit and enjoy Washington, an American classic! It is a great place to live, work and raise a family.
