Ascension Parish President

Ronnie Hughes

Welcome to the fastest growing parish in Louisiana; we hope your visit here will be a pleasant one. Our parish is a blend of all that is good in Louisiana; our ancestors are Cajuns, Europeans, Africans, Mexicans, Asians and Indians, and we see this great diversity as one of our main strengths. While you’re here try some of our local cuisine, it’s the most delicious food you can find anywhere in this country.

Ascension has a rich cultural history and we are a community of many religious denominations, ethnicities and cultures. We celebrate these diversities with a number of fairs and festivals such as the Jambalaya Festival in Gonzales, the Boucherie Festival in Sorrento and the Sunshine Festival in Donaldsonville.

While you’re here, visit the historic city of Donaldsonville, which is located on the west bank of the Mississippi River across the Sunshine Bridge. It is the parish seat and formerly the capital city of Louisiana. The Town of Sorrento is a small town, which boasts of its two rapidly growing educational facilities, the River Parishes Community College and the Louisiana Technical College, both serving the river parishes.

Gonzales is the largest city in Ascension Parish and, in addition to its world famous Jambalaya Festival held in June, Gonzales is home to a Tanger Outlet Mall and many other retail stores, hotels and fine restaurants. The Ascension Parish/Lamar-Dixon Expo Center is located on the outskirts of Gonzales on a beautiful 247-acre site. It is about two miles off I-10 and is a state of the art exposition center, which boasts equestrian, livestock, cultural and other entertainment events, as well as a YMCA facility and 300 full-service RV rental sites.

The warm and friendly people who call Ascension Parish home are possibly our greatest assets. We also have an excellent education system, health and hospital services and top-rated law enforcement agencies. We hope you will feel welcome here if you’re just passing through. If you’re considering relocating to south Louisiana, you couldn’t find a better locality in which to live, work and rear your family.
