As the second largest historic district in the state, the city takes pride in its awesome attractions, great restaurants, unique downtown area and its very own River Road African American Museum, where you can find cultural and artistic treasures.
Discover the variety of sites as you walk the streets of downtown Donaldsonville. Dine at the popular Grapevine Restaurant while enjoying live entertainment on Friday nights. Grab a bite while enjoying the game with friends at the Capital Bar & Grill. Our July 4th Celebration (celebrated on the eve of the 4th) is filled with brilliant displays of fireworks, good food, fun, music and dance! In the fall we celebrate our annual Sunshine Festival with rides, booths, a variety of music and the best food around. Alvin Batiste, one of the most sought after and collected primitive artists around, is a resident of Donaldsonville. As you stroll down Railroad Avenue, you may find him painting in the window of Rossie’s Art Gallery. Billy Bob Thornton is counted as one of his many fans.
Christmas and Mardi Gras Parades, historic sites and our annual Juneteenth Celebration can all be a part of your next visit to Donaldsonville. Plan a trip to experience our Evening Stroll on the Avenue every fall—a living historical rendition complete with an evening of carriage rides, walking historians in character and much more. The visit would not be complete without a walking tour of our impressive Historic District, which has the finest collection of historic structures in any of the surrounding parishes, including the Ascension of Our Lord Jesus Christ Church, which is one of the most impressive structures on the tour. Built in 1875, this beautiful gothic church features impressive stained glass windows and 20 marbled columns from Austria.
So, remember Donaldsonville as a great destination city where fine people, great food, quaint bed & breakfasts, unique antique stores and much more will be sure to contribute to a lasting memory for you and your family. mayorofc@donaldsonville.brcoxmail.comSorrento is a small municipality of approximately 1,400 people located in the southern portion of Ascension Parish. Sorrento was settled in the early 1860s by descendants of the French Acadians who brought their ancestors’ culture and traditions with them.
In the early years, the country residents were mostly farmers until the railroad came through the settlement around 1907 and brought progress – the sawmill. From 1909 to 1950, Sorrento was a thriving community and people came from all over to work at the sawmill.

Today, Sorrento is proud to be the home of the River Parishes Community College and the Louisiana Technical College-Ascension Campus. Sorrento is also the home of Reynolds Lambert Park/Ascension Civic Center where the annual Sorrento Boucherie Festival, the Sorrento Volunteer Fire Department Trail Ride and the popular Sorrento Senior Christmas Party are held. There is also a Cajun Village in Sorrento comprised of old buildings and antique farm equipment where tourists can eat Cajun food, listen to Cajun music and learn our culture and traditions.
