As a community grows, so does the likelihood for crime and disturbance. The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, Gonzales Police Department and Sorrento Police Department have stepped up to this new challenge by running efficient, effective operations and by working together to assure us that our parish will continue to be a safe and healthy place to live.

Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office

Under Jeff Wiley, the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office is a dedicated supporter of the Ascension Chamber of Commerce and Ascension business and industry. The sheriff’s office believes that an economically strong community provides the funding to support their missions, which are necessary to maintaining a quality community where business can thrive.

The Office of Sheriff for Ascension Parish was created by Louisiana Legislature in 1807. Today, by constitutional and statutory decree, the sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer of the parish, the chief tax collector of the parish, the keeper of the jail and an officer of the courts.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office is currently led by Jeffrey F. Wiley, who has been a public servant in the parish for more than 36 years. The sheriff’s office employs 278 full-time employees, 27 part-time employees and has nearly 40 reserve volunteers. Each of the dedicated professionals who make up the department are assigned to one of nine divisions operating out of seven separate physical facilities.

In 2009, 4,734 criminals were arrested and jailed in Ascension Parish. The staff of the jail must also care for the medical and mental needs of a population that now averages about 470 inmates. Additionally, educational, counseling and job skill programs are available, giving inmates viable options upon release.

The work volume of the Sheriff’s Office has increased over the last decade in proportion to the growing population of Ascension Parish. Last year, the Sheriff’s Office received more than 56,000 calls for service. Each of those calls, along with more than 150,000 informational calls, was initially received and directed by the Sheriff’s Office 911 Dispatch Center, which also handles all calls for Gonzales Police Department, Sorrento Police Department, Ascension Ambulance Services and Ascension Fire Departments. All of the 911 functions in Ascension Parish have been consolidated into a single entity, which increases efficiency and saves taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars. Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office is responsible for courtroom security and civil process services. In 2009, more than 44,000 civil services were made and thousands of individuals, including victim’s witnesses and accused offenders, attended courtroom proceedings under the watchful eye of courtroom security personnel.

Quality of service is central to the complex operations of the Sheriff’s Office. Every applicant for an enforcement position must pass a rigorous battery of testing, which includes physical fitness, educational aptitude, psychological testing, background investigation and an oral interview, all followed by months of supervised field training upon hire.
