Located at the southern end of the Mississippi and Central flyways, the Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge was created in 1937 as a sanctuary for area wildlife. The refuge protects one of the nation’s major wintering grounds for waterfowl, with peak populations reaching more than 300,000 ducks and 80,000 geese. The nearly 35,000-acre wildlife haven is also home to swamp rabbits, fox squirrel, mink, coyotes, white-tailed deer, a large population of American alligators and more. Hunting and fishing are permitted at designated times, with hiking, biking, boating and wildlife observation rounding out the list of available activities. The Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge is open all year, seven days a week from sunrise to sunset.
