In 1825, Jefferson Parish was named after America’s third president and author of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson, to commemorate his role in the Louisiana Purchase.
Not only Louisiana, but also all or part of 16 other states became American property as a result of the 1803 purchase of real estate from French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.
