Lafayette is also the Hub City for shopping, drawing visitors from within a 50-mile radius. These 600,000 shoppers add up to continuously record-breaking sales tax revenues for Lafayette’s retail centers. In 2011, retail sales were $4.8 billon.
There are five major shopping areas: the Mall of Acadiana, Northgate Mall, the Oil Center, River Ranch Traditional Neighborhood Development and Downtown Lafayette. All five offer the consumer a great variety of goods and services in Lafayette, and each offers a unique atmosphere. At the Mall of Acadiana, shoppers can find major department stores and national retail chains, while Northgate Mall offers the same options across town. The Oil Center, River Ranch and Downtown Lafayette contain locally owned shops selling clothing, gifts and unique items, in addition to restaurants. There are also dozens of other shopping centers and national chains to meet the needs of shoppers.
