Welcome to Heart & Soul of Cajun Country!
Cajun Country stretches along the Gulf of Mexico and up into the south central Louisiana. Centuries ago, French Canadian refugees arrived and began developing the beguiling culture that you’ll find here today – spicy flavors, hot music, friendly people and good times.
Here, along the breathtaking bayous, the first French Canadians settled in and forever changed the landscape and culture of our state. Resourceful, stoic and inventive, these were the people who turned soup into gumbo, washboards into musical instruments and made the swamp a mystical paradise.
In Cajun Country, you'll discover crawfish etouffée, dance to zydeco music and learn many new and interesting words. Take a swamp tour and you'll see snowy egrets in graceful flight, blue herons tall and still against the blazing sky, moss-covered cypress trees and other magnificent sights. In Jennings, visit the live alligators at Chateau des Cocodries for a rare chance to hold a baby gator and see a 105-year old turtle!
Here, you can venture into the swamps for wildlife adventures or into the warm Gulf of Mexico waters and catch your limit on a deep sea fishing excursion.
While you are in Cajun Country, we recommend that you take the top down and visit the more than 180 miles of the Creole Nature Trail. It is one of the first National Scenic Byways designated by the U.S. Secretary of Transportation in the Gulf South, and that designation was upgraded in 2002 to the highest category, an All-American Road. Along this distinctive natural corridor through Louisiana's Outback, one of America's "Last Great Wildernesses," you have the opportunity to experience world-famous wildlife habitats and estuaries. The Creole Nature Trail is a journey through a wild and rugged terrain unique to Louisiana, America and the world.
