Location & Transportation

The five-parish region comprising Southwest Louisiana is equipped with a location conducive to both business and commuter transit. The area borders the Gulf of Mexico to the south and Texas to the west, and features an excellent transportation infrastructure that allows for easy travel in, out and around the region and beyond.

Southwest Louisiana is easily accessible by…

ROAD

highways

The parishes of Southwest Louisiana are served by a multitude of well-maintained highways that provide great opportunity for efficiently transporting and delivering local goods, while also offering attractive commute times for employees. Interstate 10 bisects the area, connecting with U.S. Routes 165, 167, 171 and many other conveniently located highways in the area.

RAIL

An extensive rail network makes its way through Southwest Louisiana, with Atchison, Topeka, Santa Fe, Union Pacific and Kansas City Southern servicing the area. The majority of the region’s industrial parks and its ports are furnished with rail access, a strong advantage in the distribution industry.

WATER

With a location on the Gulf of Mexico, Southwest Louisiana is home to several significant ports that support the region’s petrochemical and fishing industries. The Port of Lake Charles is the 11th-largest seaport in the nation, while the East Cameron Port stands among the top five ports for fishers in the U.S., notably producing and distributing wild American shrimp and speckled trout. Other ports in Southwest Louisiana include the West Cameron Port, West Calcasieu Port, Mermentau River and Vinton Harbor and Terminal Districts.

AIR

The region’s sole commercial air provider is Lake Charles Regional Airport (LCH), which is serviced by Continental Airlines (with flights to Houston) and American Airlines (with flights to Dallas/Fort Worth). In addition to its commercial service, LCH provides general and corporate aviation options, along with two helicopter operators that serve the oil and gas industries in the region.

Chennault International Airport, also based in Lake Charles, is a public-use airport supporting industrial and commercial companies, including Northrop Grumman, Aeroframe Services, Million Air and Louisiana Millwork. Other public-use airports located in Southwest Louisiana include Allen Parish Airport, Beauregard Regional Airport, Jennings Airport and the DeQuincy Industrial Airpark.
