There are plenty of both active and passive recreational activities to be found within and nearby Opelousas. The city’s Parks and Recreation Department oversees nearly a dozen park sites within its boundaries, which include:

• North City Park, located at North Market Street
• South City Park, located at South Market Street
• Park Vista Playground, located at the corner of Jasmine Drive and Rose Avenue
• Perry Lane Playground, located at the corner of Perry Lane and Paris Street
• Sidney Street Playground, located at the corner of Herman Street and Sidney Street, as well as at the corner of Sidney Street and Patsy Street
• Grolee Playground, located on Grolee Street
• Greenwood Playground, located at the corner of College Avenue and Arkansas Avenue
• Ledoux Circle Playground, located on Ledoux Circle
• Southwest Playground, located on Park Avenue
• Fern Street Playground, located on Fern Street
• Indian Hills Playgrounds, located on Natchez Boulevard and Cherokee Drive

The City also operates two recreation centers, situated in North City Park and South City Park. Both of these locations offer Opelousas residents a number of summer recreation programs, with everything from baseball and softball, a Biddy Ball League and art, drama, music, dance, tennis and swimming lessons to a program for the area’s senior citizens.

Nestled within central St. Landry Parish is the 11,000-acre Thistlethwaite Wildlife Management Area, an ideal site for hunting and educational nature walks. And situated just outside of the parish in Ville Platte is Chicot State Park. This 6,400-acre park provides ample opportunities for fishing and boating on Lake Chicot (three boat launches are available) and plenty of sites for camping, picnicking, swimming, climbing playground equipment and hiking along a trail that encompasses the lake itself.

Golfers don’t have to look far for excellent courses. The 18-hole Indian Hills Country Club offers a 6,149-yard course for a par of 71. Opened in 1949, Indian Hills features Bermuda Grass fairways and greens, and it is perfect for those looking for either a challenge or a leisurely game amongst friends. Another choice is the nine-hole Red Oaks Golf Club. The course opened its doors in 1996 and offers a total of 5,173 yards from the farthest tee for a par of 70.
