Education

Excellence in education at all levels is a cornerstone in the life of Vermilion Parish residents. The Vermilion Parish School System operates 18 facilities throughout the area, including 10 elementary schools, three middle schools and five high schools. Specialized education programs, free adult education classes, student support services and a wide range of co-curricular activities supplement a rigorous traditional curriculum. Nine Vermilion schools received Recognized or Exemplary Growth on School Performance Scores. Vermilion Parish Schools District Performance Scores have risen from 22nd to 11th in Louisiana in the past 10 years and are first in the region. Vermilion ranks 5th in Louisiana for classes taught by highly qualified teachers.

The area is also home to a great number of early childhood education and day care centers, as well as a list of private and parochial institutions. Exceptional alternatives to public education can be found through several private elementary and middle schools, as well as Vermilion Catholic High School, the only Catholic high school in the parish.

Through a strong partnership between community and the educational system, Vermilion excels in supporting education.

Higher Education

Students don’t have to leave home to attain a high-quality college degree. Abbeville hosts Louisiana Technical College’s Gulf Area Campus, an institution with a mission to provide quality, hands-on instruction that will prepare students to enter the business world with the skills, knowledge, judgment and attitudes necessary to be a productive part of the workforce. The Louisiana Technical College family believes that a stronger economy is closely tied to an educated and trained workforce. Faculty and staff understand that learning takes place at several different phases in a person’s life; therefore, the campus strives to provide the quality training needed for various citizens of Vermilion Parish. The Gulf Area Campus provides short-term training resulting in the potential for immediate employment.

Training programs focus on occupational and technical fields, general education, continuing education, business and industry-specific training, and other special modifications of programs as necessary to meet the requirements of business and industry. In addition to traditional teaching methodology, the campus utilizes mobile labs and simulated training modules to replicate actual work environments. A variety of academic programs are offered through the college, leading to technical diplomas, certificates and Associate of Applied Science degrees. The campus offers workforce development programs, distance learning options and non-credit online courses as well.

Vermilion Parish’s location also places it within close proximity to the renowned University of Louisiana at Lafayette, the largest member of the university system with more than 16,300 students enrolled each year. Within 30 minutes, students can take advantage of nearly 80 undergraduate degree programs, 27 master’s degree programs, a post-master’s certificate program and doctoral degrees.

Vermilion Parish Library

After several tries, the citizens of Vermilion Parish officially passed a $1 million tax that resulted in the permanent establishment of the Abbeville-based Vermilion Parish Library in February 1942. Over the ensuing years, branches sprang up in Kaplan, Gueydan, Maurice, Erath and Delcambre, and the Mobile Library (bookmobile) was instituted in order to serve various destinations throughout the parish.

Vermilion Parish Library

The library system has experienced much growth since its formation more than 65 years ago and today holds a collection of more than 60,220 volumes and 2,158 magazine and newspaper subscriptions. In addition to the print selection, the branches offer a wealth of books on tape and CD, videos, DVDs and playaways, which are books available for play on an MP3 player. The system also offers copy and faxing services, free wireless Internet, VCR and DVD players and access to a number of online databases. For groups who need a place to meet, the libraries in Abbeville, Kaplan and Erath offer the use of meeting rooms, which are accessible both during and after hours.

Books

Video conferencing equipment has been provided to the Vermilion Parish Library via a grant from Lake Charles Memorial Hospital TeleMedicine Program. The library is now able to offer Vermilion Parish medical programs, virtual field trips for students and educational training opportunities for the business community.

Aside from the facilities and amenities of the library, patrons of all ages take advantage of a calendar year of excellent programming, including summer reading programs, story hours and book clubs, among many others.
