While Vermilion Parish houses a diversified base of businesses, with major employers constituting the industries of healthcare, construction, manufacturing and oil and gas, the agricultural industry plays a major role in the local economy. The unique and varied landscape of Vermilion Parish and its surrounding area gives way to a diversified agricultural industry. In 2008, this sector generated more than $183 million through plant production, livestock, aquaculture and fisheries. Sugarcane and rice are leaders among plant producers, with approximately 29,500 acres of sugarcane and 62,000 acres of rice plantings available. The area is home to 690 beef producers and around 300 horse producers, with alligators, crawfish, shrimp and menhaden topping the list of commodities produced through the parish’s numerous fisheries.
