The historic cities of Biddeford and Saco comprise the largest commercial center in York County, the gateway to the State of Maine. Just 90 miles north of Boston and 15 miles south of Portland, the two cities comprise the banking, retail, service, and manufacturing center for York County. This region of the State of Maine has a long relationship with the regional and national economy. Today, the local economy is strong and diverse.

Particularly strong is the presence of high tech, plastics, electronics, composite materials, food products, fabricated metals, and more traditional businesses.

The communities of Biddeford and Saco offer outstanding site locations to industrial and commercial businesses within their individual business parks. All parks are fully serviced and located along the Maine Turnpike and Interstate 95 corridor, providing convenient access to Southern Maine and East Coast markets.

The region’s traditional industries have created a quality workforce as indicated by the concentration of manufacturing industries in the region. Both communities are served by technical colleges and a university, and both have a progressive and cooperative business environment. The educational institutions are working to provide industry specific education to the economic base industries in the region, as well as moving aggressively to expand into new programs related to regional strengths.

Both communities have experienced tremendous growth, including the development of three national franchise hotels. The Route 111 corridor to the Interstate Exit in Biddeford has become a retail magnet. Additionally, both downtowns continue to experience increased vitality with new business and restaurant activity. Both Saco and Biddeford have been designated a “Main Street Maine” community by the Maine Downtown Center for their work to revitalize the downtown.

The Biddeford-Saco Area Economic Development Corporation (BSAEDC), a certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), manages several comprehensive revolving loan programs with funding from the U.S. Dept. of Treasury, the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development, and the Finance Authority of Maine. BSAEDC is a non-profit partnership between the cities of Biddeford and Saco and the Biddeford-Saco Chamber of Commerce and Industry. BSAEDC’s mission is to promote the sustainable, long-term economic prosperity of the Biddeford- Saco Area. These programs are here to help your business grow.
