

Both cities offer their own local grammar and high school systems. They both incorporate community support of school programs and are considered excellent learning facilities.
The city of Saco has four schools that serve students K-8. The Saco school system vision statement is “School, home and community: a collaborative adventure in lifelong learning,” and it drives the philosophy that education must be a cooperative effort which involves parents, students, staff and the community at large.
Thornton Academy, founded in 1811, is a private high school governed by a Board of Trustees. Its 80-acre campus in downtown Saco includes eight instructional buildings and the headmaster’s home.
Saco and Biddeford’s two Catholic schools import a high-quality education within the context of Catholic values to students. The schools – Notre Dame de Lourdes School and St. James School – offer programs for grades K-8.
The Biddeford public schools include three schools serving students K-8. Biddeford High School houses grades 9-12. The school system addresses the needs of all students from gifted-talented to those with several handicapping problems. There is a vocational program for Biddeford students as well as those from surrounding communities.
Biddeford Middle School was awarded National School of Excellence - A Blue Ribbon School status in 1992. Biddeford High School was recognized as a National School of Excellence in 1996.
At the local branch of the University of Maine System, students may earn associate degrees locally or take baccalaureate, graduate degree or non-credit courses. Students are not required to be in any degree program, and many take courses for personal interest. The University of New England, a small independent, coed university with two campuses, has degree programs in health and life sciences, human services, management, education, liberal arts, and includes Maine’s only medical school. www.une.edu
The University Health Care, open to the public, is a teaching clinic providing comprehensive family healthcare.
York County Community College (located in Wells) is a two-year accredited institution that offers degree programs in business administration; computer-aided drafting and design; computer technology; culinary arts and hospitality management.
