All About Houlton
Dating back to 1805, Houlton is the oldest community in Aroostook County. It is also the county seat - or "Shiretown." Settled by Joseph Houlton (who migrated from New Salem, Massachusetts) long before Maine became a state, the community holds a special place in American history due to the part it played in the famous "Bloodless Aroostook War" - a border dispute that took place over a century ago.
Hancock Barracks (the site of the troop's headquarters) is preserved on Garrison Hill overlooking the town from the east, and is a favorite picnic spot.
