A Four Season Vacation Land
Springtime
The annual Meduxnekeag River Canoe Race marks the beginning of spring! It's a gala happening that revitalizes our town year after year. Another sure sign that spring is here - fiddleheads! What's a fiddlehead and where do you find it? Come spend a day like you've spent no other! Paddle in a canoe down the mighty Meduxnekeag in search of the large fern that bears this delicacy....when found, pick a bunch!! They're sure to please your palate! At the same time, cast a line in the water. Nothing goes better with fiddleheads than fresh fish! Or you can take in one of the annual fiddlehead suppers at area churches. Don't forget to look around - the trees are also budding, the smallrare flowers called Lady's Slippers are in bloom, and who knows, you may catch a glimpse of a moose. Don't go away, summer's just around the corner!
Summertime
Everyone in the region loves summer, and for good reason! There's golf on the shores of beautiful Nickerson Lake, tennis under the lights and numerous places for hiking, walking and biking. A day spent on the road will reveal some of the most inspiring and breathtaking countryside you'll ever see! Field after field of wildflowers rise up in an array of colors and fragrances. Other scenes include the covered bridge nestled amidst blooming potato fields and the preserved Market Square in the historic downtown.
The Chamber office or tourist information complex (just off I-95) can suggest a variety of other day trips - including trips to Baxter State Park, Lumberman's Museum, King's Landing in New Brunswick and the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. Summer is also a time for special festivals and community events - including Houlton's Agricultural Fair, McGill's Community Band outdoor concerts, arts & crafts fairs, Midnight Madness, Potato Feast Days, Island Falls Summerfest, Peanut Carnival & Parade, Patten Pioneer Days, Lumberman's Museum Beanhole Dinner and Sherman Olde Home Days. We are proud of our area, and wish to share it with you!
Autumn
Warm, Indian Summer days are filled with colors and the smells and sounds of fall. In this northern Maine area, there is no better time to walk our streets, kick the fallen leaves and enjoy the beauty of our many impressive homes. Take in a church bazaar and look for that special vacation treasure, such as a handmade Maliseet Indian basket or a piece of our past found in one of our many antique shops. The roadside stands and farmer's markets have a great selection of fresh vegetables and fruits. Autumn is the time for our potato harvest. Men, women and children alike are in the fields "picking potatoes" against a backdrop of beautiful fall colors! It's a great time to enjoy a Hunter's Breakfast or one of the many Harvest Suppers.
Winter
We are busy up here in the winter! There are groomed snowmobile trails, cross-country ski trails and special events. Our lakes are covered with ice fishing huts, there's downhill skiing nearby and we have indoor skating and hockey at the John A. Millar Civic Center. We have open fields and wooded trails perfect to explore on snowshoes, and if you've never had a picnic in winter, put it on your list. There's nothing like eating over an open fire on a sunny winter day. Christmas is a special time with family activities, parades, arts & crafts and church fairs. And in the early months of the year, enjoy the Moose Stompers Weekend, East Grand Lake Fishing Derby, Log Driver's Cookout at Mud Pond, or Sherman Winter Carnival for lots of outdoor fun. So come and see us. Nothing slows us down, not even Mother Nature!
