Sanford-Springvale Fun and Recreation
Sanford offers many scenic locations and a number of fresh-water lakes suitable for a variety of year-round activities. The Recreation Department offers programs for all ages throughout the year. There is a mini-golf course, a par-three golf course and an 18-hole golf course that is open to the public. Various facilities offer many opportunities to stay fit and healthy through fitness centers and other amenities.
On Hanson’s Ridge, the local orchard offers “pick you own apples” in season, as well as purchase their fresh vegetable from the farm. Their cross-country ski trails offer healthy outdoor recreation at its best. Businesses on Shaw’s Ridge offer “Ice Cream like Grandma used to make,” eating facilities with indoor and outdoor seating, gardens to enjoy, activities for the children and a nursery with plantings for our New England climate.
Smitty’s Cinema has six large-screen theaters that combine first-run feature films with a pub-style menu. Seniors can enjoy activities at the YMCA Trafton Senior Center, and the Sanford Maine Stage in Springvale offers year-round live entertainment.
Tennis courts are located in the Elizabeth Benton Playground, Carpentier Park, Gowen Park and the Robert William Batchelder Memorial Playground in Springvale. Sport areas include Little League Park, Sanford-Springvale Youth Association Field, Shaw’s Ridge Soccer Field and the Skate Board Park adjacent to the YMCA.
Holdsworth Park and the Springvale Recreational area offer supervised swimming, covered picnic area, hiking paths and playground equipment.
The Mousam Way Trail, with its beginning in Gowen Park, has more than eight miles of trails, ending up on the Stanley Road in Springvale.
Goodall Park, a 784-seat stadium, has a covered bandstand with night lighting. It is the home field for the Sanford School Department Baseball and Field Hockey teams, with Babe Ruth, American Legion Baseball and Twilight League calling this their home as well. It is also the home of the Sanford Mainers Baseball Team, a member of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
