Skowhegan is an Indian word for "A
Place to Watch." Early Abnaki Indians chose this strategic bend in
the river to watch for salmon coming upstream. Today, Skowhegan is a place
to begin for the many visitors and tourists who come to experience the
waterways, the scenic back roads, the historic state fair and the many
activities that center around the area. Skowhegan is also a place to call home for more than 9,000 proud residents and for a diversity of businesses and industries that make the local economy one of the strongest in the state. A home of deep roots, many current residents boast of ancestors going back several generations and of children who dream of someday carrying on the family business.
