One of the Largest Cities in Maine

South Portland, Maine’s fourth largest city, is located on the southern coast of the State of Maine in Cumberland County, the state’s most populous county. Convenient access around the area is provided by U.S. Interstate Route 95, U.S. Interstate 295, and U.S. Route 1. Within South Portland there are approximately 5.8 miles of active main railroad lines.

With a residential population of 23,300, there are many neighborhood communities in South Portland. The City also enjoys a diversified commercial, industrial and advanced technology aspect to its economy. Oil storage tank farms along the Fore River receive foreign crude oil shipments imported by the Portland Pipeline Corp. for transmission to Canada as well as refined products for domestic consumption.

The City of South Portland is the site of the longest continuous operating semiconductor manufacturing business in the world, the headquarters of Fairchild Semiconductor and home to National Semiconductor’s largest manufacturing facility. The Maine Mall Shopping Center forms the hub of the largest shopping district in the state. Situated on 98 acres, the Maine Mall consists of 140 stores and 18 restaurants employing more than 3,000 people. The success of the Maine Mall has stimulated the growth of adjacent shopping areas and many fine hotels.

South Portland operates its educational program for grades K through 12. The staff educates just over 3,300 students among five elementary, two middle, and one high school. Southern Maine Community College is also located in the City and other institutions of higher education, including the University of Southern Maine and the University of New England are just a short drive away.

The City is also environmentally and culturally vibrant, maintaining more than 250 acres of parks and open space including the Greenbelt Walkway, Bug Light Park, Willard Beach, Hinkley and Millcreek parks and Spring Point Shoreway. The main library and branch library support a collection of over 90,000 volumes and circulate over 150,000 items annually, and several historical sites and museums are available in South Portland.
