Tewksbury, and Wilmington, Billerica is divided by Route 3A which runs
through its center and leads to the major highways of Route 3, Route 128/95
and Route 495. Although residents move about mainly by car, local bus
service is available through the Lowell Regional Transit Authority (www.lrta.com),
while commuter rail service at the North Billerica train station (www.mbta.com)
provides access to Boston to the south and Lowell to the north. In addition,
MBTA bus service to connecting stations into Boston is available at the
Burlington/ Billerica line on the Route 62/76 bus. Other limited forms
of transportation are also available: In the past 50 years Billerica has
grown from a small town of 10,000 people to a much larger community of
nearly 40,000. This increase led to the building of many residential subdivisions
which surround the older neighborhoods of the Center, North Billerica,
Pinehurst and Nuttings Lake. Though the town has mostly single family,
owner occupied homes, there is also an over-55 community (Danforth The town is traversed by two main waterways, the Concord River, which still serves as its major water source, and the Shawsheen in the southerly part of town, which has been known to overflow its banks in the winter thaws. Bluelight
