Billerica has become a "regional" employment center, while still retaining its status as suburban community. There are many acres of land zoned for industry and industrial parks, which will allow for the continued growth of commerce and industry within its borders. The major employing industries in the town are government (including the Billerica House of Correction), construction, manufacturing, trade, and service as well as transportation, communications, and public utilities. The
community leaders and residents work hard to involve the businesses as
active participants in the town. The concept of civic responsibility is
recognized and encouraged. The Annual Business Person’s Breakfast that
is co-sponsored by the Billerica Chamber of Commerce and the Billerica
Plan recognizes the small and the large business persons who have made
major contributions to the community by their support of civic groups,
sports teams, and those in need. Large corporations like Jabil Circuit and Nortel provide grant monies for local improvements. Cabot Corporation supports the town's recycling hotline and provides meeting space for a variety of non-profit groups in town. Bristol Myers-Squibb, Billerica Crossings, and LifeCare Center of Merrimack Valley are counted amongst the corporate sponsors of Billerica's Annual Health Fair. Smaller businesses like Escape Salon and Spa are very involved with environmentally friendly products and are very supportive of the annual Earth Day celebration. Many small business owners are not only residents, but also participate as town meeting members, and sit on the myriad of town and civic committees. Colleen
Sgroi, a local artist, each year works with one non-profit to create a
local themed picture that can be used for their ongoing fund raising effort.
The
types of services and opportunities that these nearly eighteen hundred
small, medium, and large businesses provide is endless. Many have said
that you need not leave the town of Billerica, as you will find nearly
every service available within its boundaries.
