graphicSince 1730, Wilmington has conducted its public affairs through an Open Town Meeting in which every registered voter is eligible to participate. Day-to-day administration is in the hands of a professionally-trained Town Manager acting with the advice of an elected five-member Board of Selectmen.

Since its adoption of the Town Manager system in 1950, the town has developed one of the most completely professionalized administrative staffs of any Massachusetts town of comparable size. It possesses full-time city workers and modern fire, police, public works and building departments and one of the most comprehensive public health and sanitation programs in the area. All activities and departments, except the school departments, are under the Town Manager’s administration.

Citizen participation, however, continues in the work of over one hundred citizens serving on such Boards and Committees as the graphicPlanning Board, Finance Committee, Conservat#ion Commission, Historical Commission, Recreation Commission, Permanent Building Committee, Library Trustees, Housing Partnership and a Commission on Disabilities among others.
