contentsBay City Area MI Chamberads

History

History

First inhabited by the Sauk Indians around 1786, Bay City was founded in 1837 and incorporated as a city in 1865. Once Bay County was established, many settlers moved to the area because of its deep waters, which were a good choice for businesses that relied on shipping. Bay County was formally established in 1857 with the merging of parts of Midland County, Saginaw County and Arenac County.

By 1860, the Bay Area community consisted of approximately 2,000 people, with lumbering, milling and shipbuilding as main sources of revenue. By the late 1800s, 50 lumber mills had been built in the area, making Bay City “The Lumber Capitol of the World.”

Bay County Historical Society

The rich and varied culture and history of the Bay Area has been preserved, interpreted and exhibited by the Bay County Historical Society since 1919. The Society maintains extensive archives and artifacts, some of which date back to the 1870s.

The Bay Area has evolved into a community known for its magnificent waterfront, recreational opportunities, friendly people and much more. What was once a small industrial area is now a remarkable place that is proud of its past and looking forward to a bright future.
