Location and Transportation

Saginaw Bay

Located on the eastern shore of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, the Bay Area borders Saginaw Bay, which is an inlet of Lake Huron. Multiple streams, creeks and two rivers—the Kawkawlin and Saginaw—run through the community. The downtown area of Bay City is the urban heart of the region. The Liberty Bridge on the North, Columbus Avenue on the South, Madison Avenue on the East and the Saginaw River on the West border the central city area, which consists of about 60 square city blocks.

Whether traveling for work or pleasure, people enjoy the Bay Area’s close proximity to many large cities. Lansing is about 95 miles away, and Detroit is about 100 miles south. Other cities in the region include Grand Rapids, Toronto and Chicago. Several thoroughfares are easily accessible and include U.S. Interstate 75, U.S. Highways 23 and 10, and Michigan Highways 13, 15, 25 and 84.

Numerous flights depart and arrive daily, and direct service is available to many cities, including Chicago, Minneapolis and Detroit. Minutes from Downtown Bay City, James Clements Airport has three runways and water-landing capabilities.

shipping

Rail service transports goods throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico; transit is offered through CSX Transportation, Central Michigan Railroad Company and Lake State. MBS International Airport is a major center for air cargo shipments. The shipping industry is essential to the Bay Area economy, and many businesses and industries transport goods via water channels.
