The area has long had an affinity for animals. In the first half of the 20th century, the Western Knitting Mill was one of the largest producers of wool socks for the U.S. military, and the entire region was well-known for its sheep farms. Another example of the area’s fondness for animals is Leader Dogs for the Blind, an international organization based in Rochester that offers free training for guide dogs and their owners. It is not uncommon to see leader dogs and their trainers around downtown Rochester.

Approximately 12 percent of the region’s population is aged 62 or older, and this number will grow tremendously over the next two decades. The citizens of Rochester understand that providing safe, enjoyable living for the elderly is a crucial concern. That is why they voted to fund the construction of a new $14 million, 90,000 square foot senior center run by the Older Persons’ Commission (OPC). The OPC provides social and educational opportunities for seniors, in addition to serving nutritious meals to the homebound. The OPC also supplies transportation, exercise facilities and organized activities. With the combined efforts of the OPC and nearly a dozen retirement homes and care centers, the Rochester area has been a great place to live an active, productive senior lifestyle.
