Educational Services

The Rochester area believes in providing many options for a well-rounded education, anchored by two community school systems, numerous private schools and three colleges. Community growth has led to the construction of new schools and increased educational services throughout the area.

The Rochester Community Schools District serves a 66-mile district and provides public education to more than 14,500 students in 13 elementary schools, four middle schools and four high schools, as well as adult and ESL education. In addition to a comprehensive K-12 education, the district offers a preschool curriculum that is developmentally based and planned to coordinate with the Rochester Community Schools kindergarten program. The district’s Enrichment program offers dozens of opportunities for lifelong learning, including adult fitness, computer classes, arts, financial and legal classes, languages, dance, leisure learning and aquatics.

Avondale Schools

A percentage of the area’s students attend Avondale Schools in Auburn Hills, a 3,800-student district drawing from four of the fastest growing municipalities in Oakland County: Auburn Hills, Rochester Hills, Troy and Bloomfield Township. Avondale administers four elementary schools, one upper elementary school, one middle school, and one high school. Both Avondale Middle School and the Deerfield Elementary facility have been named National Blue Ribbon Schools.

For parents who wish to include a religious component or a special methodology in their children’s education, there are also numerous private educational facilities available in all varieties, including Lutheran and Catholic prep schools, Montessori schools, several K-12 Christian schools, and the Cranbrook schools, internationally recognized for education, science and art.

Oakland University

The Rochester area also offers a number of nearby opportunities for a high-quality college education. Oakland University is a nationally recognized university in Rochester that offers hundreds of bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees and Ph.D.’s, five professional schools and an Honor’s College. Over 17,000 students enjoy a distinctive education, Division I athletics and cultural attractions such as the Meadow Brook Theatre, the Meadow Brook Music Festival, the Meadow Brook Hall and Gardens, and over 100 students performances staged by OU’s Department of Music, Theatre and Dance.

Hart Middle

For those who prefer the close-knit atmosphere of a small private liberal arts college, Rochester College may be the perfect fit. Formerly Michigan Christian College, Rochester has grown into an accredited four-year college with over 1,000 enrolled students, offering bachelor’s degrees in 20 major fields of study. A state-of-the-art library and a $4.5 million academic center were recently added to the campus.

The 170-acre Auburn Hills campus of Oakland Community College, one of the largest community colleges in the nation, not only provides a full range of programs and degrees; it is also the site of the CREST Homeland Security Training Center. The 22-acre facility is a simulated city, which allows trainees to experience realistic emergency scenarios.
