The Rochester area is continually viewed as the perfect place to raise a family. With its proximity to Detroit, first-class schools and ample recreation, it’s easy to see why. Adding to this are the vibrant cultural sites and golf courses that are found nearby, plus Detroit’s exciting sporting events, concerts and other entertainment options that are just a half hour away. The homes of the area represent a mix of the old and new, as well-established neighborhoods of the past are joined by modern residential developments. Safety is ensured through the establishment of active Neighborhood Watch programs in many of these neighborhoods.

Pet lovers also find solace in the Rochester area, with more than 40 businesses, from national supply stores to veterinarians, located here to meet the needs of those special family members. The area has long had an affinity for animals; in fact, in the first half of the 20th century, the Western Knitting Mill was one of the largest producers of wool socks for the U.S. military, and the entire region was well-known for its sheep farms. A further example of Rochester’s fondness for animals is Leader Dogs for the Blind, an international organization based in Rochester that provides free training for guide dogs and their owners.

A larger portion of the region’s population is aged 60 and better—a statistic that is set to remain on the grow over the next two decades. Recognizing the need to provide quality services and programs to the area’s mature population, the citizens of Rochester backed the construction of the $14 million, 90,000-square-foot senior center operated by the Older Persons’ Commission (OPC). The OPC provides social and educational opportunities geared toward seniors, in addition to serving nutritious meals to the homebound. The organization also supplies transportation, exercise facilities and an array of organized activities. With the combined efforts of the OPC and nearly a dozen retirement homes and care centers, the Rochester area has become a haven for those seniors in search of an active and productive lifestyle.
