City of Rochester Hills

The City of Rochester is governed by a city manager and has a mayor and a seven-member city council. The government provides full city services, including police, fire and water/sewer services. The City of Rochester Hills is governed by a mayor and a seven-member council. Oakland Township does not have a mayor; a seven-member township board guides the area. The Rochester Hills Fire Department maintains five fire stations, and the Oakland Township Fire Department covers the area of its namesake. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Department serves and protects both Rochester Hills and Oakland Township.

Rochester Hills Public Library

For those who love reading, research or relaxation, the 70,000 square foot Rochester Hills Public Library, located in downtown Rochester, is a true sanctuary. Long known for its outstanding public service, the library owns over 210,000 books, DVDs and CDs free for rental to those who live and/or work in Rochester, Rochester Hills and Oakland Township, in addition to the theoretical millions available through interlibrary loan. With beautiful gardens and a 750-gallon aquarium, there are many ideal places to sit back and soak in the book of your choice.

The library is a resource for people of all ages and abilities. Programs include lap sit story times for infants, Sunday concerts for the entire family, and cultural and educational programming for adults and children. Large-print materials and magnification equipment are available for people with low vision, and the facility is equipped with automatic and power-assist doors, an electric scooter, an elevator, drive-up window and outdoor book return. The Outreach Department also provides English as a Second Language materials, programs and computers. Individuals who are shut in can get home delivery of library materials. Mini branches and bi-weekly book cart services are available at most adult residential and extended care communities in the library’s service area.

The library’s award-winning website (www.rhpl.org) will help you navigate the Internet and allow you to use the library after hours for your research and recreational use, providing access to over 30 online databases.
