There is ongoing development of new subdivisions, should you want to build your own home. These new development projects will be continuing into the new millennium, offering affordable housing units. With this recent growth and the expansion of local utility services into these areas, Lake City is well poised to meet the housing needs well into the 21st century.
Ohuta Park lies on the banks of Lake Pepin. Picnic facilities, a playground and large grassy areas are filled with visitors all season long. Free public boat access is available to everyone. Relax on the sandy beach by the designated swimming area, complete with beachhouse, lifeguards and floating platforms. Hok-Si-La Municipal Park has beautifully groomed trails to enjoy a leisurely walk, a full playground, picnic facilities, beaches, boat launch and primitive campground facilities. McCahill Playpark will keep the kids busy while you enjoy the beautiful scenery and views of the marina in downtown Lake City, take a walk along the pier, or fish from the small beach. Patton Park spotlights our town gazebo, water fountain and park benches and tables. This park hosts community events throughout the year.
Lake City has a public elementary school and junior/senior high school, as well as a parochial school. Lake City School District recognizes that an individuals quality of life in the 21st century will be affected by the educational opportunities open to them as children and young adults. The Districts mission is to provide a quality program for all students, and to foster in them a desire to achieve success at whatever level is appropriate for them.
With more than 1500 students enrolled, the school system employs more than 100 teachers, plus numerous assistants and support staff. Lake City schools offer a broad curriculum to meet the diverse needs and interests of the students. Well-equipped facilities also enhance the educational quality of the school system. The schools are well-equipped in the field of technology. Computer labs are supplemented by a curriculum that makes the schools leaders in technology education. Four years of foreign language instruction are also available. Music instruction starts in kindergarten and continues through high school. Band and chorus begin in the fifth grade. There is a full-time art teacher on staff who meets with all students and encourages participation in art competition.
The fine arts department at Lincoln High School excels in vocal and instrumental music and visual art. The band is active and recognized in statewide competition. Extracurricular activities include FFA, drama, chorus, band, speech, student government, VICA, AFS, Danceline, Cheerleading, Business Professionals of America and math league. The athletics department offers football, volleyball, wrestling, baseball, softball, tennis, golf, track, cross country, and basketball. Several individuals and teams have achieved state and national recognition and awards in both academic and extracurricular activities.
Lake City offers a wide variety of shopping opportunities to meet your everyday needs as well as those special occasion items. You can take care of your grocery shopping, stop at the pharmacy, pick up dog food, take care of business at the bank, pick up a few things at the hardware store, and fill up the gas tank - all within three blocks. Shopping in Lake City is trouble-free with convenient parking and easy walking. Visitors come here to stroll through the historic streets, appreciate the 19th century architecture and venture into many specialty gift shops and antique stores. Amish quilts and furniture, a five-and-dime-store, nautical gifts, framed art, old fashioned candy shop, antique stores ... the diversity is what makes Lake City so enticing to visitors and residents alike! Shopping here is rewarding, fun and convenient, attracting people near and far.
