From its industrial beginnings to its present-day art galleries perched alongside residential homes, Northeast Minneapolis has always been an eclectic place to live and work. As you stroll along Central Avenue, Northeast’s commercial mainstay, you’ll pass historic buildings, community parks, artists’ studios, and intimate cafes.

The geographic boundaries of Northeast Minneapolis are the city limits on the north and east, the Mississippi River on the west and Hennepin Avenue on the south. As you leave downtown Minneapolis, crossing the Mississippi River via Hennepin or Central Avenue, skyscrapers and office towers give way to storefronts and quaint two and three-story brick buildings. You’ve arrived in Northeast! The Mississippi River is the birthplace of the state of Minnesota, the city of Minneapolis, and its Northeast corner, and our community maintains a charm from those early days. Beautiful St. Anthony Falls began luring travelers and farmers in the early 1800’s, who then created a thriving settlement along the east riverbank. There they built functional warehouses, factories, hotels, grocers and simple strong houses. Even the street names served an important purpose. Named after presidents, the street names helped immigrants in Northeast prepare for their citizenship exams—and still do.

Today, the face of Northeast Minneapolis is changing. Many of the old brick warehouses have been converted into artists’ spaces. The modest homes once occupied by working families are being purchased and renovated by successful professionals. Factories have become offices, community centers, libraries, and condominiums. Yet, the hard work that Northeast’s neighborhoods were founded upon is still evident along its thriving business districts and in its busy family homes.
