Northeast’s stretch along East Hennepin, near the Mississippi River, has seen incredible revitalization in recent years. What was formerly a street lined with abandoned storefronts now houses countless restaurants, gift shops, bars, and markets. Along Johnson Street you’ll find a Vietnamese restaurant, a coffeehouse, a gift shop, a funeral home, and more. A three-block stretch of 13th Avenue, near the Ritz Theater, features unusual businesses like Artamotive (an art store), Art of Chiropractic (a chiropractor), Europol (a European grocer), and Erté (a Parisian-style supper club). Northeast’s
newest business district is The Quarry, a suburban- style shopping center
with national retailers and plentiful parking. The Quarry was built upon
a virtual junkyard. Following the closure of the Johnson Street Quarry,
the 42-acre site was a community eyesore filled with contaminated debris.
The opening of The Quarry in 1997 marked the transformation of this area,
bringing the convenience of Rainbow Foods, Target, Old Navy, The UPS Store,
and Home Depot to city-dwellers.
