Northeast Minneapolis is served by Minneapolis Public Schools, a citywide district serving 48,000 students. Seven public elementary schools, a junior high, and a senior high are located in the area. Students living in Northeast can choose to attend the public school in their community or a school in another part of the city, based upon which school best matches their needs and interests.

Two publicly funded schools serve children with special needs in Northeast. New Visions Charter School has created a learning environment rich with opportunity, positive reinforcement, and one-on-one learning to serve primary school students who have fallen in the bottom half of academic achievement. Menlo Park High School is an alternative learning program for high school-age students.

Edison High School opened in 1922 as Northeast High School with 1,650 students in grades 7-11. Today, it serves 1,517 students in grades 9-12, housing a magnet program designed to help students realize their dreams for their futures. Students can enroll in programs to study diverse subjects such as business finance, entrepreneurship, education, public service, cosmetology, technology, music, and theater.

Northeast families may also choose to send their children to private schools. Pope John Paul II and St. Charles Borromeo are Catholic K-8 schools in the area. De La Salle is the Catholic high school
of choice in the area. Though the school is located just south of Northeast Minneapolis, many generations of Northeast families choose to have their
children educated there.

For adults, Minneapolis Public Schools offers over 1,000 enrichment courses, some available at sites in the area. There is also the Minneapolis School of Massage and Bodyworks, Moler Barber School, and the Aveda Institute. The University of Minnesota is nearby, just a mile downstream from Northeast’s geographic boundary. The University was originally slated to be built in Northeast Minneapolis. But in 1856 when a Northeast businessman’s financing fell through, the regents voted to build the University at its present site in the Southeast corner of the city
