Richfield is known as the “suburban community with a small- town heart,” with its residential housing options reflecting that description.
Over 70 percent of the housing in Richfield is single-family homes in keeping with the hometown connotation. Much of Richfield was built in the ‘40s and ‘50s as servicemen sought places to raise their families. Cape Cod and rambler styles are the most predominant. Pride of ownership and care for a prized possession has helped these houses to become sought after properties today. This care is reflected in the fact that the median price of a single-family home is approaching $225,000.
New home construction continues as extra large lots get divided or as smaller homes are razed to make room for larger and better designed family homes.
The urban feel is clear in the many choices available in condominiums and townhouses. In the heart of Richfield is the newest and tallest residential building in Richfield, City Bella. This concrete and steel structure has shops and businesses on the ground level and luxury condominiums on floors 2 through 15. The units are available to all age levels. A block to the east is The Oaks, a development of townhomes, also available to all age levels. At 76th and Lyndale Avenue, Kensington Park offers a complex of retail shops and three levels of residences.
Apartments are plentiful and provide another housing option for those not in the market to own their residence, while still giving them the benefits of Richfield’s location “close to everything.”
An annual remodeling fair brings residents and contractors together to explore the “What’s New” in building materials, up-to-date home designs and landscaping ideas. Richfield was first in the metropolitan Twin Cities to present a remodeling fair, called “Street of Possibilities” beginning in 1993. This has had a strong influence in assisting homeowners to keep their property value growth among the steadiest in the area.
Richfield requires that all homes pass a maintenance code inspection before they are sold. This program, which began over 15 years ago, is also a major influence in keeping Richfield on the cutting-edge of well-maintained suburbs.
