The Next 100 Years

The Next 100 Years

As we march into our post-centennial years, changes in Richfield are apparent everywhere you look. Much of the current activity is centered on transportation, making our freeways and thoroughfares safer and more able to handle the demands of another century.

One of our major southern gateways (Lyndale Avenue) is being fitted with a new bridge that will allow traffic to enter Richfield safely and quickly. The new bridge is scheduled to open in November 2009. And nearby, over I-35W, a new bridge for 76th Street was recently completed, bringing people to our busy “Shoppes” area and to the Best Buy headquarters.

On our northern border, reconstruction of freeway I-35W and State Highway 62 are well underway. The completion of these roadways in 2010 will make access to and from Richfield from the west and north easier and safer.

At one of the major intersections in our city (Portland Avenue at 66th Street), we have recently completed a two-lane round-about to solve major traffic problems that had plagued the area. This is our second major round-about and both are working well and providing the intended traffic with calm and safety.

We have just completed a new city garage/maintenance facility and are in the design stage of a new city hall/public safety complex that will be completed in the next two to three years. Both facilities will serve our thriving city into the future to the benefit of our residents and visitors. (See artist conception at right.)Expansion of business and housing developments on the city’s east side continue to make these next years ones of exciting change.

city

We are fortunate that while new businesses and enterprises call Richfield home, we retain many of the businesses that have served our city so well over the years. Examples of endurance include Bachman’s Florists (1885), Gill Brothers Funeral Home (1889), Elsen’s Garage (1893) and Wagner Greenhouses (1904). These businesses mesh well with others that have been in the area for 50 years or more. Some long-standing enterprises are the Frenchman Restaurant & Bar, Hub Jewelers, Richfield Flowers, Carlberg Radiator and Auto Repair, Richfield State Insurance, Broadway Pizza, Richfield Nursery & Garden, Woodlake Cleaning Center, Nilsen Funeral Home, Nelson’s Barber & Hair Styling, Sandy’s Tavern, the list continues.

Richfield has been a good place to live, work and do business, and in the future we’ll be even better!
