The communities around White Bear Lake include Dellwood, Mahtomedi, Willernie, and Vadnais Heights. The White Bear Yacht Club, Dellwood Hills Country Club and luxury homes set on wooded lots make Dellwood, population 925, one of the area's most prestigious places to live. In the past, residents such as F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald made their home here, and currently some of Minnesota's corporate pioneers reside here, adding a touch of glamour to the area. Dellwood stretches along three square miles of the northern shore of White Bear Lake and boasts the highest median income in the state.

With one eye on the past and the other on the future, Mahtomedi offers residents small town character and the attractions of lakeside living. Situated on the eastern shores of White Bear Lake, the city has a population of just 7,000. Seven lakes and 125 acres of parks make Mahtomedi a recreational haven and a growing industrial and commercial tax base, further enhancing the attractiveness of the community.

Mahtomedi encircles the city of Willernie, the retail center for both towns. With a population of only 568, Willernie was originally built to resemble an English village. Today, its narrow streets still wind past cottage-like homes.

Vadnais Heights has been incorporated for nearly 35 years and has grown into a thriving suburban business center. Presently, the city has a population of 13,000 people and is home to 200 businesses; growth in terms of tax base and job opportunity is expected to double in the future. Vadnais Heights is popular not only because of the business opportunities available, but also because of its many ponds, lakes and wetlands in addition to 11 local parks.

Of the residential communities in the area, Birchwood Village, North Oaks and Hugo are most notable. Birchwood Village is home to just over 1,000 people. It is located on the southeast shore of White Bear Lake. Less than a thousand homes are nestled into the 5,548 acres of open fields and wooded hillsides that make up North Oaks, an exclusive area with homes ranging upwards in price to $1 million. Outfitted with private trails and roads, North Oaks offers its 3,386 residents a sense of remote solitude.
