Transportation and Location
Located in the far southeast corner of Minnesota, the city of Winona is in close proximity to major highways, as well as several large cities.
Highway 61 connects the community with La Crosse, Wisconsin and the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. Interstate 90 offers a quick connection to the cities of Rochester, Madison, Milwaukee and Chicago.
Amtrak’s Empire Builder rail service travels between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest, affording Winona travelers routes to the Twin Cities and Seattle to the northwest, or to downtown Chicago to the southeast.
Nearby airports are the La Crosse Municipal Airport, located approximately 30 minutes from the city, and Rochester International Airport, which sits 45 minutes away. Additionally, Winona’s Max Conrad Field allows charter, corporate and private aircraft flights.
Winona is one of the largest Minnesota cities along the Mississippi River, offering commuters a number of accessible modes of transportation — along major highways, by rail or by air.
