Parks and Recreation

Recreation in Winona and its surrounding area is abounding, offering residents and visitors an array of outdoor pastimes sure to fit every interest. The city contains 3,000 acres of open space and parks, and the Winona Park and Recreation Department maintains a free recreation center open throughout the year, as well as the seasonal Bob Welch Aquatic Center and 4.8 Skate Park.

A number of parks, lakes, golf courses and more are located in Winona, offering a wide range of recreational activities:

• Garvin Heights Park overlooks the city and the river valley, affording beautiful scenery and local bird-watching.

• Lake Park surrounds Lake Winona, equipped with a bandshell, walking paths, playgrounds, Veterans Memorial Park and more.

• Windom Park is home to the bronze statue of Princess We-no-nah.

• Levee Park is a beautiful area encompassing parkland, picnic areas, fishing and views of the Mississippi River.

• Lake Winona stands as a great site for canoeing and kayaking, biking and hiking, bird-watching and fishing.

• Prairie Island provides canoeing and kayaking in the city, as well as bird-watching and fishing.

• Aghaming Park serves as a 1,950-acre site for avid bird- watching, trails, canoeing and more.

A dozen golf courses and clubs are positioned within a 30-minute drive from Winona, with two located in the city. The Bridges Golf Club (formerly the Winona Country Club) is an 18-hole, par 71 course sitting upon 6,746 yards of greens. A popular nine-hole course is the Westfield Golf Club, a par 36 course on 3,331 yards in Winona. Other courses and clubs nearby include Cedar Valley, St. Charles, Valley High, Coffee Mill, Ferndale, Lewiston, Pine Creek and several others across the river in nearby Wisconsin.

Further recreational opportunities lie at the Bud King Ice Arena, open September through March and offering a full-size hockey arena and outdoor rink, and at the Minnesota Equestrian Center, home to a number of horse shows. Additionally, a host of cross-country skiing trails can be found in Winona, with seven trails situated within a 30-minute radius of the community.
