Healthcare

It’s becoming increasingly rare for a small town to have an independent, community-owned, healthcare organization such as Winona’s. And it’s rarer still for a market of this size to be leading the way in using technology to improve healthcare quality and safety. But that’s just what’s happening at Winona Health, a nonprofit, integrated healthcare system whose mission is to improve the health and well-being of the community.

What began in a converted home as Winona General Hospital in 1894 has evolved into Winona Health—a community healthcare organization providing care for families and individuals from birth through end of life, with personal attention to individual needs and preferences.

The organization’s ongoing ability to improve the health and well-being of area residents can be attributed to the consistent support of the regional community, the help of more than 350 auxiliary members and the dedication of more than 1,200 staff members, including more than 60 physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners.

Winona Health provides integrated healthcare services through its hospital, specialty and primary care clinics and senior services.

Primary care clinics are located in Winona, Rushford and Lewiston, Minnesota. Specialty services include women’s health; eye care; sports and orthopedics; occupational health; psychiatric and counseling; surgery; oral surgery; dermatology; and pain management. Senior services include assisted living and memory care residences; a long-term, skilled nursing residence; home care and hospice. Winona Health also collaborates with tertiary care centers in La Crosse, Wisconsin and Rochester, Minnesota.

Consistently named a Most Wired Small and Rural Hospital by Hospitals & Health Networks magazine, Winona Health was at the nation’s forefront in providing an integrated Electronic Medical Record. In addition to other advantages, electronic records make important information immediately accessible at an individual’s point of care. This commitment to using technology to improve the quality and safety of patient care has drawn attention from much larger healthcare organizations. In 2008, a national PBS NewsHour story featured Winona Health’s advances in Health Information Technology. In addition, leaders at Winona Health have been tapped to share their experience and expertise with members of the United States Department of Health and Human Services.
