Worship

Faith through worship is a strong facet of life in Winona. The first service, held by Jedediah Stevens, a Presbyterian pastor, was held even before the recognition of Winona as an official city. Without having a building in which to present the sermon, it was given outdoors, in the middle of the woods. Now, Winona has gained acknowledgement as a “City of Churches,” once encompassing more places of worship per capita than anywhere else in the entire country.

More than 50 churches and faith-based communities, offering an array of denominations and religions, have made their home in Winona. Beyond each service, church-going residents make a positive impact in the community through several organizations and programs. Through its commitment to worship, Winona residents maintain a strong, close-knit community.
