Community Introduction

Settled in the midst of Minnesota’s natural beauty, Winona boasts a balance of small-town living with the resources of larger communities within easy reach. As the county seat of Winona County, the city’s landscape is made up of rolling bluffs, wooded areas and the tranquil views of both Lake Winona and the vast Mississippi River.

Abounding in history, the city’s name was derived from the Indian word “We-no-nah,” translating into “first-born daughter.” Legend has it that Princess We-no-nah was in love with a French explorer, DuLuth, who was said to have passed through the area while embarking on a dangerous expedition. Though she loved this explorer, the Princess was forced by her family to marry an Indian warrior.

The night before Princess We-no-nah and the Indian warrior were to be wed, she scaled the area’s high bluffs. At the top, she searched the water in front of her for her true love; after finding no sign of DuLuth, she jumped from what is now known as Maiden Rock, choosing death rather than living a life without love. A statue of her now resides in Windom Park.

Those residing in Winona, or simply visiting the area, enjoy the abundance of year-round recreational activities, from fishing, hiking and golfing in the warmer seasons, to snowmobiling and cross-country skiing in the winter.

This island city’s cultural atmosphere remains a significant aspect of community life. One will find stained glass studios, unique art exhibits, the Minnesota Marine Art Museum, an array of music festivals and concerts, as well as several local theater companies such as the Theatre du Mississippi and the acclaimed Great River Shakespeare Festival company.

Top-rate education thrives in the area through the Winona Area Public Schools system, several private, parochial and charter educational facilities, and three local higher education institutions — Winona State University, Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota and Minnesota State College-Southeast Technical. Winona also boasts top-notch medical services provided by Winona Health and a healthy business and industrial environment supported by a host of nationally known companies.

Winona is a city for everyone, welcoming visitors from around the country throughout the year. From its breathtaking scenery, accessible amenities and wide range of dining and shopping spots, the city and its residents take pride in calling Winona home.
