Mississippi’s Gulf Coast is fast gaining a reputation as one of the best areas in the nation for retirees. In addition to the lovely setting, temperate year-round climate, and abundant attractions, Mississippi has the lowest tax burden on seniors of any state in the Sunbelt.

Mississippi has no tax on retirement or pension benefits. Residents older than 65 also are exempt from property taxes on the assessed value of their primary residence, up to $60,000. Overall, the state has the sixth-lowest tax burden in the nation.

Although the area has experienced phenomenal growth, it remains an extremely affordable place to live. The cost of living, housing prices, healthcare costs, and crime rate are all well below the national average. Modern Maturity magazine has called the Biloxi/Gulfport area one of the nation’s 10 best small-town areas.

The Mississippi Gulf Coast Retiree Partnership has launched a web site to pique the interest of potential retirees searching the Internet for new destinations to winter and live year-round. The site www.gulfcoastretirement.org, features information for new senior residents.
