The Spirit of Public Service

The City operates under a code charter form of government. The governing body of the City consists of the Mayor and a seven-member Board of Aldermen. Six members are elected from wards while the seventh member is elected at-large. Both the Mayor and members of the Board of Aldermen are elected to concurrent four-year terms, which will expire in 2009. The current Mayor and members of the Board are: Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler; Alderman-At-Large Lisa Clingan-Smith; Ward 1 Alderman Tawanna Tatum; Ward 2 Alderman Pat Peeler; Ward 3 Alderman Ken Jacobs; Ward 4 Alderman Steve Hickok; Ward 5 Alderman Michael L. Hudgins; and Ward 6 Alderman Guy Bowering.

Departments within the City of Madison include Finance and Administration, Parks and Recreation, Community Development, Public Works, Fire Department and Police Department. Fire protection and emergency medical services are provided by 28 career and 30 volunteer firefighters operating three pumpers, one aerial truck, two rescue and four command/support vehicles. Residents of Madison enjoy one of the lowest crime rates in the nation, thanks to the 79 sworn officers and 23 civilian support personnel. In 2002, the City of Madison Police became the second police department in Mississippi to be awarded national accreditation from the prestigious Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement. In August 2005, Madison was granted re-accreditation by the Commission for an additional three years.
